Academic and co-curricular activities

Academic Activities:Internal Assessment and Credit System:

Every Department of the College shall organise within each academic year [July to June] at least one Students’ Seminar, one Departmental Quiz and one Departmental Seminar.

Attendance is compulsory for all students who shall be given credits based on their participation and involvement in these events.

All students and their guardians are requested to take the CREDIT SYSTEM seriously as this has been devised for the benefit of the students and for their all-round development.

Internal Assessment and Credit System for Honours students:
20 marks Class performance and participation in quiz, seminars, student seminars, extra-curricular activities like Yoga, NSS, NCC and DEAS etc.
10 marks Mid-term Examination [Students shall be tested on 100 marks which shall be brought down to 10 marks for overall assessment].
60 marks Selection Test [Students shall be tested on 100 marks which shall be brought down to 60 marks for overall assessment].
10 marks Reserved for attendance throughout the year.
Internal Assessment and Credit System for General students:
20 marks Class performance.
10 marks Mid-term Examination [Students shall be tested on 100 marks which shall be brought down to 10 marks for overall assessment].
10 marks Regular attendance.
50 marks Selection Test [Students shall be tested on 100 marks which shall be brought down to 50 marks for overall assessment].
10 marks Participation in extra-curricular activities like Yoga, NSS, NCC and DEAS etc.

Students shall be sent up for the University Examinations on the basis of their performance on 100 acquired through this INTERNAL ASSESSMENT AND CREDIT SYSTEM.

Attendance:

  • Students will be informed well in advance about the status of their attendance. No student will be allowed to take any examination or class test without 75% attendance as per University regulations.
  • Students adopting unfair means in college examinations will not be sent up for University Examinations.
  • In all cases of poor performance in internal College Examinations shortage of required percentage of attendance and adoption of unfair means in college examinations, the decision of the Principal and the Teachers’ Council shall be final.
  • Parents of students who remain consistently absent without prior notification, shall be intimated by the college regarding their words’ prolonged absence, after which the errant students’ names will be struck off the College Register, and parents shall receive a letter by courier informing them of the decision of the college authorities.

Co-curricular Activities

  • Students’ Representative: The students elect their own representatives from their own classmates.
  • Sports: Facilities for indoor and outdoor games like table tennis, badminton and carrom are available to students. Annual College Sports meet is a part of our co-curricular programme. A physical instructress is part of our academic profile, and trains interested students for inter college sports events.
  • Annual Social: Students participate in Annual competitions, debates, quizzes, music and dance competition, one -act plays etc.
  • Excursions: The College takes students on regular educational excursions supervised by the Teachers of the College.
  • College and Departmental Magazines: Each Department has its own Annual Newsletter. Every Department shall publish one Newsletter in which all Departmental activities shall be recorded. The College shall publish annually three Journals one each from the Language, Science and Social Science Departments. Student-edited journals shall also be published by different Departments.
  • Yoga and Karate: College has the provision for Yoga and Karate classes for the students as per their own interest.

Supplementary Activities:

  • National Social Service (NSS): The Basanti Devi College unit of the National Social Service became active with 100 students in November, 2002. After a flying start, the NSS Unit has participated in a wide range of activities. Important among them are blood donation camps, workshops on AIDS awareness, environment awareness, visits to old age homes, children’s welfare organizations and slums. Students participate as volunteers. The college has organised programmes on National Integrity and lecture sessions on disability and students participated on a value orientation course organized by Vivekananda Nidhi (a five day programme) students participated in the programme. The College offers special opportunities for differently abled students.
  • National Cadet Crops (NCC): Basanti Devi College has recently launched a chapter of NCC. All students of first year classes required to submit NCC forms at the College office along with a one-time fee of Rs. 20.
  • Social Extension Services [MAITREE]: The College provides students interested in social welfare work, with the opportunity to be directly involved in voluntary rural community service. Teachers accompany the students to the villages of Dharsha and Bashina in Rajarhat. This is a UGC sponsored programme. Also the college has initiated programme on Medical history for the students
  • Legal and Psychological Counselling Cell: The students are encouraged to enrol their names in Legal and Psychological counselling cell for the benefit of the students. The College endeavours to provide students with free legal aid and psychological counselling.
  • Students’ Health Home: The College has a membership of Students’ Health Home where students are provided with medical facilities at a subsidised rate.
  • SC/ ST Cell: The College also has a separate SC/ ST Cell comprising of representatives from students, teachers, non-teaching staff and Government representatives to cater to the needs of the SC/SC students.
  • Grievance Redressal Cell: There is a separate Grievance Redressal Cell in the College. Teachers and non-teaching staff interact with the students on a regular basis and redress their grievances.
  • Right to Information Cell : The Right to Information Cell is formed to help students.
